summary || three miracles were what brought them here.
He finds himself blinded as he looks out across the sapphire blue ocean. Bright lights shine down on him, illuminating the stage and the wide wide expanse of space in front of him. The stage is emptier than it normally is, feels larger than usual.
And it is.
Because instead of sharing the stage with ten other boys he has to fight with only one for the spotlight. Which is on him all the time anyway. He watches as the other boy runs down one of the extended stages, his hair slick with gel and neck covered with a sheen of perspiration.
The opening beats for their next item come up, his ears filling with the sound from his earphones and the echoes from the hall. He raises his microphone, waits for the moment and begins to sing.
As he sings he watches himself ride a bicycle down the lanes of Cheongdam-dong, rapping out lyrics from H.O.T. and singing at the top of his lungs with barely a care in the world. He watches himself dance in the old practice rooms, the ones that the rookies use. He watches himself as he dreams of being a global star, his heart and soul in every dance step, in every word he speaks.
He watches himself as he grows up, going from trainee to idol. He watches himself as he changes hairstyles five times over in the span of a year, singing songs with a smile permanently etched on his face. Dancing past injuries, dancing past tears, dancing to the sound of cheering and sapphire blue lights.
But there is someone beside him as he watches himself. There is another person. Another boy, another one who shared the same dreams he did. The one who said jokingly, before they even knew whether they were ever going to debut, “Donghae-yah! Let’s become a duet item after we debut!”
Back then, he'd scoffed. What were the odds that they would end up in the same idol group, much less in a duo? The company was feeding off of group stages, a duo would not be in their favour for a long time yet.
The first miracle happened when they found out they were both placed into Super Junior 06. Yet the everlasting knowledge that they were a group that was going to rotate on a yearly basis was a sign that their dreams might not ever come to fruition.
The second miracle was when the concept of a rotational group dissolved in their favour. The albums began coming in, and they were singing, dancing, being invited for events they’d never heard of before. Learning new languages, travelling to China, Taiwan, releasing albums in different genres. Then the concerts began, the crowd numbers and places they went to increasing every year. They were as close to becoming global stars as any idol group had ever become, and this was enough, this was happiness, this was living a dream come true.
He had forgotten the careless remark Hyukjae had made, so many years ago. The thought of becoming a duo item had barely surfaced in his mind after he had found out he was debuting in a group with so many members.
But the news came, the third miracle.
“Donghae-sshi, Eunhyuk-sshi, we are looking at starting a duo subgroup for Super Junior and feel that the two of you are most suited for this subgroup.”
He had been silent, not believing his ears.
They would be called Donghae & Eunhyuk, or D&E for short. It was the closest to being an independent duo they could be, and they knew it.
And so here he stands on stage watching Hyukjae goof around, dancing with his heart and soul and every tiniest part of himself.
The knowledge is invigorating, raw energy coursing through his body. Because he is here, and Hyukjae is here, and they are together, on this stage, and –
Hyukjae envelops him in a hug, the warmth of his body reminding him that this is real, this is actually the truth; they are living out their dreams together.
Donghae thinks to himself that there’s nobody else he’d want to share this dream with.
a/n: yup, so i wrote this on a whim, suddenly thinking of how surreal it must feel for donghae and eunhyuk to stand on a stage they can actually call their own.
